A buyer in Plano asks ChatGPT “who is the best commercial roofer near me that handles insurance claims.” A practice manager in Irving asks Google’s AI Mode which billing companies work with small clinics. Neither sees ten blue links. They see a short answer that names two to five businesses and gives a reason for each. Answer engine optimization services exist to get your business into that answer, and to prove when it is.
The trouble is that “AEO services” now covers everything from a serious program of research, fixes and monthly measurement to a rebranded blog package with “AI” in the invoice line. This guide explains what a real AEO engagement includes, how results should be measured, what it costs, whether you need an agency, a consultant or neither, and the questions to ask any AEO provider before you sign.
Good answer engine optimization (AEO) services do four things: measure a baseline (your buyers’ real questions asked to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Mode without your name, and who gets named), make your business facts identical everywhere, publish pages that answer those questions plainly, and earn reviews and mentions on sites AI tools trust. Results are reported as a count with its base (“named in 9 of 60 answers”), re-measured every month. Be wary of guaranteed AI rankings, percentages without counts and content volume sold as AEO.

What answer engine optimization services are (and are not)
Answer engine optimization is the work of making AI tools — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode — name your business when a buyer asks a question you can answer. It overlaps with SEO, because most of these tools search the web before they answer, but the output is different. SEO earns a position in a list. AEO earns a mention inside a written answer, usually next to a handful of competitors and a one-line reason.
That difference changes what a service should sell you:
- It is not a content package. Twenty “AI-optimized” blog posts a month do not make an AI tool trust you. A few pages that answer real buyer questions, backed by consistent facts and outside mentions, do more.
- It is not a ranking guarantee. AI answers change by question wording, by user, by location and from one day to the next. Nobody controls them, and anyone who guarantees “#1 in ChatGPT” is selling a screenshot.
- It is not a single file. Adding an
llms.txtfile or one schema block is a small technical step, not a strategy. Treat it as optional housekeeping. - It is a measured program: find out who gets named for your buyers’ questions, fix the reasons you are not, and re-test the same questions on a schedule.
If you want the background on how these tools pick sources, our AI search vs. traditional SEO guide covers what to do first when budget is limited.
What a real AEO engagement includes
Whatever the provider calls it, a serious answer engine optimization service should produce the deliverables below. Use the right-hand column to spot the version that only looks like the real thing.
| Part of the work | What you should receive | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Question research | A written list of the questions your buyers actually ask, in their words, grouped by service and city | A keyword list copied from an SEO tool, with no questions in it |
| Baseline test | Each question asked to named AI tools without your brand in it, with every business named recorded | Questions that include your business name (they inflate the result) |
| Entity and facts | Name, address, phone, hours, services and prices made identical on your site, Business Profile and directories | “Citation building” with no list of what was fixed where |
| Schema | Organization or LocalBusiness, Service and FAQ markup that matches what the page shows | FAQ schema for questions that are not visible on the page |
| Answer pages | One page per service or question, opening with a plain answer, with price logic, process and proof | Dozens of near-identical city pages |
| Reviews and mentions | A plan for specific reviews and for mentions on industry and local sites AI tools already cite | Bought reviews or mass directory submissions |
| Monthly re-test | The same questions re-asked, with the count of answers that name you and who else was named | A “visibility score” with no questions behind it |
Two of those rows decide most results. The first is facts: if one directory says you close at 5 and your site says 6, or your service list differs between your site and your Business Profile, AI tools hedge or skip you. Our entity consistency guide lists where to check. The second is answer pages: a tool can only repeat what is written somewhere it can read. If your price logic, service area and process live only in a sales call, the answer will name someone who wrote them down. The structure we use is in how to build a resource AI search engines can cite.
Pro tip: Ask any provider to run five of your buyers’ questions in front of you, without your business name in them, before you sign. You will learn more about your real AI visibility, and about the provider, in fifteen minutes than from any proposal deck.
How AEO results should be measured
AEO is easy to report vaguely and hard to report honestly. Insist on three numbers, each with its base:
- Named in N of M answers. The fixed set of questions, asked the same way on the same tools each month, and how many answers name you. “Named in 9 of 60 answers, up from 4 of 60” is a result you can check. “AI visibility up 125%” is not, because it hides the base.
- Who else gets named. The competitors in the answers you are missing from, so the work targets the reasons they are chosen.
- Visits and leads from AI tools. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot send referral traffic you can see in Google Analytics 4 if it is set up to separate it, and calls and forms can be tied back to it. The setup is in how to measure traffic and leads from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini.
Because AI answers vary, a single test proves little. What counts is the same question set re-run over months, with the method written down so the comparison is fair. If the question set changes, the report should say so and start a new baseline instead of comparing unlike things.
What answer engine optimization services cost
Price follows scope: how many questions are tracked, on how many AI tools, for how many services and cities, and whether the pages and facts behind them need to be built or only adjusted. A business with a strong website and clean listings may need only monitoring and a few fixes; a business with a thin site needs the SEO foundation first, because most AI tools search the web before they answer.
For reference, these are our own published prices:
| Option | Price | Fits when |
|---|---|---|
| AI visibility audit | Free | You want the baseline first: who gets named for your buyers’ questions today |
| AI visibility monitoring | From $500 a month | Your site and listings are solid; you need the monthly re-test and a short fix list |
| SEO + AI growth | From $1,500 a month, setup from $1,250 one-time | Pages, facts, reviews and mentions need real work, and Google rankings matter as much as AI answers |
All of it is month to month. Whoever you hire, compare proposals on what is delivered and measured, not on the monthly number alone: a cheaper plan that never re-tests the same questions cannot tell you whether it worked. Our article on why cheap SEO is the most expensive mistake applies to AEO just as much.
AEO agency, consultant or in-house?
| Option | Strength | Weak spot | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| AEO agency | Research, technical, content, outreach and reporting under one roof | You may talk to an account manager instead of the person doing the work | Businesses that need the site and the measurement done for them |
| AEO consultant | Senior judgment, a clear plan, lower monthly cost | Someone on your side still has to build the pages and fix the listings | Companies with a marketer or developer who can carry out a plan |
| In-house | Knows the business and the customers best | Easy to test once and stop; hard to stay neutral about your own results | Larger teams that can hold a monthly testing routine |
For most local and mid-sized businesses the deciding question is simple: who will actually change your website and your listings each month? If nobody inside can, a consultant’s plan will sit in a folder.
Questions to ask before you hire an AEO provider
- Which questions will you track, on which AI tools, and can I see the list before we start?
- Do the test questions leave out our business name? If not, the baseline is inflated from day one.
- How many answers name us today, and who is named instead? A provider who has not looked yet cannot price the work honestly.
- What changes on our website and listings in the first month? You should hear specific pages and fixes, not a content calendar.
- How will you report change? Look for counts with their base and the same method each month.
- Do you connect AI referrals to calls and leads, or only to visits?
- Who does the work, and will I talk to that person?
- How long is the contract, and what do I keep if I leave (pages, test history, logins)?
The same buyer’s logic for SEO in general is in how to choose an SEO company in Dallas; most of those twelve questions apply word for word.
What you can do yourself this week
You do not need a provider to see where you stand. In one afternoon:
- Write down ten questions your last customers asked before they bought, in their words.
- Ask them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Mode without your business name, and note who is named. Our AI mention audit guide has a simple sheet for it.
- Compare your name, address, phone, hours and service list on your site, your Google Business Profile and your three biggest directories, and fix every difference.
- Check that your
robots.txtdoes not block the AI crawlers you want to be read by; see which AI crawlers to allow. - Pick the question where a competitor is named and you are not, and make sure one page on your site answers it in the first paragraph.
What to do next

Frequently Asked Questions
Answer engine optimization (AEO) services get a business named in the answers AI tools write, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode. The work covers researching the questions buyers ask, testing who gets named today, making business facts identical across the web, publishing pages that answer those questions, earning reviews and mentions, and re-testing the same questions every month.
Price depends on how many questions, AI tools, services and cities are tracked and how much of the site needs work. At Mantas Auk the AI visibility audit is free, AI visibility monitoring starts at $500 a month, and SEO + AI growth starts at $1,500 a month with setup from $1,250 one-time, all month to month.
They overlap but measure different things. SEO earns a position in a list of results; AEO earns a mention inside a written AI answer. Most AI tools search the web before answering, so a solid SEO foundation helps AEO, but AEO also depends on consistent business facts, plain answers to buyer questions and mentions on sites the tools trust.
No. AI answers change with the wording of the question, the user, the location and the day, and no provider controls them. What a provider can promise is the method: a fixed set of questions, the fixes made, and an honest monthly count of how many answers name you.
Track three things: how many of a fixed set of answers name you (for example, named in 9 of 60), which competitors are named where you are missing, and the visits, calls and forms that arrive from AI tools in Google Analytics 4. Re-run the same questions the same way every month so the numbers are comparable.
Hire a consultant if someone on your team can build pages and fix listings from a plan. Hire an agency if nobody inside can, because AEO only works when the website and listings actually change each month. Either way, ask to see the baseline and the question list before you sign.
